I have had mixed feelings about Stargate Universe in the first half of the series. While on one hand it has several outstanding actors and character drama, on the other it often has an overemphasis on sex and soap opera elements, and that is even before the issue of not dealing with the ethics of body swapping. Thankfully Justice is a powerful character drama which while at times predictable highlights all of the best elements of Stargate Universe, with none of the worst.

After last week's controversial and disappointing episode Stargate Universe went back to its roots with one of the staples of the Sci-Fi Genre Time Travel. While last week I was frustrated over the lack of thought regarding the consequences of peoples actions, my main complaint this week is that all the welcome character details and development is erased through use of the reset button.

For the second week in a row I found the episode of Stargate Universe to be less than inspired. Thankfully the episode was not another "we have run out of this resource" episode, but I found that the episode as a whole felt slightly disjointed and could have used expanding into a 2 part episode so that some of the issues raised, especially the ethical ones could be explored instead of ignored.

This was a strange episode for me, since while there was nothing particularly bad about the episode, I was not particularly enthused about it at any point. The most likely reason for this that I can come up with is that all the episodes so far have been concentrating on resource issues to the detriment of any other plot and Water was more of the same.

I was initially worried about how this two parter would turn out given the lackluster conclusion to Air and because I heard that this and Darkness were initially a single episode. Fortunately my misgivings were unwarranted and while Darkness and Light were not the best episodes of TV that I have watched they were solid.

While the conclusion to the introductory episode Air was disappointing with its overly cliched plot, Darkness is a much more enjoyable episode and acts as the "getting to know you" episode that the series needed. The main problem I have is that I did not feel that much "dramatic tension" regarding the cliff hanger type ending as it happens so early in the series that you know that things will turn out alright in the end.

After a superb opening, the conclusion of the introduction to Stargate Universe is a bit of a let down. We get the resolution of the threads that were left hanging last week. There was a little in the way of character development but I ended up thinking that it was 1 part too many and that some elements of Air could have been deferred to a later episode.

Warning: This post contains spoilers if you have not seen the episode

After the surprising cancellation of the excellent Stargate Atlantis, there was much trepidation about the direction of this latest member of the Stargate franchise, which was rumoured to be aimed at a younger audience and be more highly sexed than its predecessers. While the first episode Air has already showed indications that this may be the case, the high quality of the episode has allieviated most of my worries in this regard. All that remains to be seen is if the quality is maintained as the series progresses.
