Film Thoughts – Transformers: Dark of The Moon

One Sentence Review

Another Michael Bay Transformers Film, but this time in 3D

My Thoughts

Another year, another Transformers film by Michael Bay which he promises will be better than the last one. So after watching the film I should have really said, another year, another broken promise from Michael Bay.

On the positive side if you just go into the film expecting to see lots of CGI robots fighting in 3D and a semi-coherent plot then you will not be disappointed, you will also appreciate some of the in jokes and foreshadowing more if you know that Sentinel Prime is voiced by Leonard Nimoy, which I didn’t know and only guessed after Sentinal Prime quoted Spock’s “needs of the many” line from Star Trek 2.

Unfortunately the first 30 minutes or so drag with a lot of it going on painful attempts at humour regarding Sam’s current circumstances, and Michael Bay makes no attempt at hiding the fact that Rosie Huntington-Whiteley was cast as Eye Candy. Thankfully the parents only have a minimal role which suggests contractually obliged appearance as they have no real role and are forgotten about once the action starts.

As I already stated the plot is only semi-coherent and while it makes sense it the context of the film, when the earlier films are taken into account I was left wondering why is Earth such a Transformer artefact magnet, I mean it not only had the all spark and sun harvester but now we learn that it was chosen as a meeting place between SPOILER and SPOILER regarding SPOILER.

There was also one point late on in the film where I am wondering if I drifted off for a minute since Bumblebee goes from rescuing Sam one moment, to being shown as a Decepticon prisoner the next and I don’t remember him being captured. Fortunately I didn’t go to see the film for the plot but instead went to see giant Robots fighting and destroying things, so I was not disappointed.

As for the film being 3D, I view 3D as a gimmick to increase the cost of a cinema ticket, and while it probably added a small amount to the film I did not go away thinking this film had to be shot in 3D or that I would have lost too much if I had seen the 2D version.

My overall feelings about the film was that while I enjoyed the film once it got past the first 30 minutes, it was not all that different from the first couple of Transformers films except that there was even more destruction this time around.

My Rating

6/10
