Ashes to Ashes: Season 3 Episode 1 Synopsis
Alex is talking to a psychiatrist about her difficulty adjusting to the real world but claims to be no longer hearing voices, but avoids commenting on if she is still dreaming about Gene as she has a daydream of Gene chasing down and killing two armed criminals. Alex then compares her situation to Sam Tyler’s and how he heard them begging for help and wonders if the “coma world” is a real place which the psychiatrist refutes.
Later Alex is in an electronics store and see’s a film advertised which stars Gene and the Fenchurch East crew (LE99L FORCE). Ray then appears on the televisions in the store asking for help tracking down a kidnapped girl Dorothy Blonde, Chris then appears and tells her that they need help and that he and Shaz are no longer together. Shaz then appears asking for help as she is back to making tea and biscuits. A mystery man then appears and says its not fair what he (Gene) did to her. Finally Gene appears and tells her to wake up.
As Alex enters the main part of town, Gene is on all the electronic billboards and she suddenly finds herself in a cell watching herself in a (modern) hospital bed at 9.06 where she sees a story on the news about a policemans body being found in Lancashire, she then sees a dead policeman with a damaged face behind her before she is woken in 1983 by Gene with a slap. Gene then hands her some clothes and tells her to leave.
Gene fills her in on him being on the run in the Isle of Wight and Costa Brava before deciding to return to fight for his future. They then fire up the Quattro and head back to the station where everyone is surprised to see them. Gene’s first act is to kick DI Ray Carling out of Gene’s office and catch up on the Dorothy Blonde case. When Alex is making herself some tea the radio starts to speak about Molly, 8 years ago and being desperate. Shaz walks in and Alex tells her than being home didn’t feel real though being not awake (in 1983) does.
Dorothy’s parents (David and step mother Marjorie) arrive and Gene and Alex watch the ransom tape which gets eaten before they can see the Ransom. A little later Alex fixes it and see it is in code and Alex suspects it may be biblical in nature. Gene then demands a thorough background check on Dorothy Blondes family and his filing cabinet returned.
After interviewing the parents when Gene and Alex return to the department they find DCI Jim Keats of Discipline and Complaints in his office who was the mystery man on the TV, they then all head to Luigi’s for an informal chat. Jim starts off by saying it is obvious Gene did not mean to shoot Alex, but then says that the incident puts Fenchurch East on Operation Countryman’s and Newman’s radar. Jim then asks Gene to go home on full pay until things blows over. Gene agrees as long as he does not have an escort.
After Gene leaves Alex asks Jim about visiting her in hospital. Jim then tells Alex his watch stopped at 9.06 exactly. Jim tells Alex he is here to help. Later in her room Alex tries to make sense of what she saw before she woke up and sees the dead copper standing in a field on her TV.
Later at the station she and Chris crack the Ransom code which is Book, Chapter, Verse, Word. The code translates to Fifty Grand in a cloth bag behind hammers (West Ham). Gene then walks in and takes over, but allows Ray to ask David Blonde to be wired for a sting, though the first attempt fails. Chris when checking the background mentions that a warehouse was emptied three months earlier due to health and safety and the mortgage was recently transferred into Marjories name.
Back at the station they discover that Marjorie was originally married to Gary Soaper a criminal who escaped from prison 5 months ago, but is currently in hospital after crashing a car during his escape. Gene then thinks David Blonde went to Soaper to find a loan shark which led to the kidnapping, however when they visit Gary Soaper in hospital he is obviously incapable of being involved due to the extent of his injuries. As they leave his room Jim Keats appears and reprimands Gene, Jim then tells Alex she could be back for a reason but not to help Gene but to help him and that Gene is at the heart of things.
At Luigi’s the team go over the plan to rescue Dorothy. Marjorie then walks in and tells Alex that Gary met a Methodist preacher in prison who could be involved and warns Alex about Gene but agrees to wear a wire to the meeting.
The next day the ranson drop goes wrong when Ray panics and launches the sting early. During the botched operation a dummy is dropped with another tape attached saying another drop is at 8 and if the police are involved Dorothy dies.
Later while investigating the Methodist preacher they come across the name William Carburton who had a record for kidnapping. When going to his residence they discover he died two weeks earlier but also that Gary Soaper had recently been trying to get in touch with him and was not brain damaged.
Back at the station Gene asks Shaz to do some surveillance of the Blondes to her surprise. Gene and Alex then head back to the hospital and discover the man is a catholic and so not Gary Soaper. Alex then works out that Marjorie is in on the kidnap but wants out, she also works out that there is a good chance Dorothy is being held in the abandoned warehouse.
When they get to the warehouse they discover Dorothy’s coat and after a little searching Alex discovers a false wall and hears Dorothy behind it. After contacting Gene, he bursts through the wall rescuing Dorothy and arresting Gary Soaper. At the Blondes, Marjorie is thrown out and says she couldn’t help falling for Gary.
Back at the station, there is a celebration until Jim Keats walks in. He acts friendly giving them a bottle of champagne and declaring it a station of mavericks so he has to investigate them but he has a soft spot for them. His attitude changes though when speaking in private to Gene where he tells Gene that he hates him and that he eroded his team who could have been good coppers but are now lazy third rate slackers and idiots, and they wont notice as he dismantles the station around them. Jim then tells Gene it is horrible job to show the world who Gene really is and what he did three years ago.
In storage Alex is getting Genes filing cabinet where she finds the police file on Sam Tyler, she then sees the dead copper staring and smiling at her.
Back with Jim and Gene, Jim taunts Gene by telling him that as this place defines him (Gene) he will have to stay and watch while he dismantles the place around him but that he hopes he (Jim) can help Alex. They then both head back to the celebration as Alex walks in with Sam’s file, Jim then goes over to Alex and tells her that he really wants to help her and that she is there to find out the truth.
