“Ashes to Ashes” – Season 2 Episode 6 Synopsis
Spoiler Warning: This post contains a detailed Synopsis of the 5th Episode of Season 2 of Ashes to Ashes
The episode opens with Alex and Gene chasing a criminal through a fun run, Alex then has a vision of herself going into surgery and hears Molly asking to see her. Gene captures the criminal who tries to escape by the canal but fails, Gene then spots a dead body floating in the canal.
The autopsy of the body suggests that the man did not drown but was murdered as he has a blow on the head and spiral scars on his arm, but they don’t know who it is. In the office Chris finds a missing person report that matches the body a Colin Mitchell.
They go to tell the father Stanley Mitchell, who is trying to organise a neighbourhood watch meeting and Alex convinces Gene to give a talk. They then find out that someone is beating one of the people up. They then tell Stanley his son is dead, and he thinks a local loan shark Trevor Riley is responsible.
Gene and Ray go round to tell Colins wife Donna that her husband is dead, who refuses to believe he is dead, until they show her his body which causes her to break down completely until Alex talks to her. Alex then gets a call from Martin Summers who taunts her over her upcoming operation, she then goes off with Gene to speak to Trevor Riley.
Trevor Riley acts fairly cocky when informally interviewed by Alex and Gene and claims he is being framed. Back at the station Viv gives them news of where Colins car was found, and Gene sends Ray along as punishment.
At the canal Alex hears voices from the operation, and tells Ray to take the lead, who thinks Alex is punishing him for messing up with Donna. When searching the car they then find 2 plane tickets to Turkey one for him and the other for 2 months later for Donna.
Back at the station they call in Donna, and Alex receives a bunch of dead roses. In the interview with Donna, they work out that Colin and Donna were going to run a life insurance scam, and escape to Turkey.
A little later while discussing the case Viv says he has some bad news and they then visit Colins wife who has an injured Stanley with her. While talking to them Alex becomes disorientated and has a vision of doctors operating on her in the kitchen and retrieving the bullet causing her to collapse. She then hugs Gene in celebration that she is still alive and starting to feel better.
Gene then decides to search Trevor Rileys office, but nearly get caught when Trevor Riley returns and Gene and Chris cant get in touch as the Radio batteries are dead, Gene and Alex find a video and Chris and Ray set of Trevors car alarm and steal his car to stop him finding Alex and Gene searching the office, it works but Trevor see them later. Back at the station they find it is a video of Donna and Riley having sex.
A little later while walking by from Luigi’s Gene gets attacked by some masked thugs and beaten up. Alex’s apartment then gets broken into by the same people who proceed to trash the place as she hides behind the sofa. The next day when Alex tries to talk to Gene he evades her and asks to be put in the cells so he can have some piece and quiet. Alex goes to talk to Gene who wants to fight fire with fire. Alex and Ray then interview with Donna who claims she did it to protect Colin.
Gene then hires a car, goes to Riley, punches and handcuffs him and stuck him the back of a car. Back at the station Alex and Ray work out that whoever killed Colin cared about him. We then see that Gene has taken Riley to the scrap yard, and starts to wreck the car with Riley in it but Alex and Ray manage to stop Gene before he goes too far. While it turns out that Riley is innocent, they have a lot of unpaid parking tickets to charge him with.
They then go to Donna’s and arrest her in front of Stanley and claim they will frame her to make it stick. As they go to take her awat, Stanley confesses to being responsible for Colins death. In the interview he Stanley says that he lost his temper, when Colin told him about the insurance scam, and accidently killed him when he pushed him in an argument and then made it look like Riley did it so Colins death would mean something.
At Luigi’s she hears a Doctor tell Molly that her operation went well and that the Coma patient in room 5 is having a seizure. Alex then orders a bottle of champagne to celebrate her good news, which coincides with a goal for Italy on the Radio.

The plane tickets were completely wrong for the period, a pity for a series which usually gets all the details right. They should look like this:

Something is still bothering me from a couple of episodes ago – when we first met Martin Summers. Part of the soundtrack was The Man Who Sold the World. Now we know that someone on the production team is a keen Bowie fan, but this song dates from the early seventies (coincidentally? it was the B side of Life on Mars in the US). I had a look at the lyrics and realised that this could not have been a coincidence. Google the lyrics and have a look. Not totally sure how it all relates to Alex, but it seems spookily relevant. Perhaps it is talking about Sam Tyler?
